Educational Resources

In addition to collecting and preserving materials related to the history of the fire service in New York, the Museum is dedicated to public education. In a partnership with the Education Unit of the Fire Department of New York, the Museum presents programs on fire safety and burn prevention. Over 10,000 children learn about fire prevention at the Museum each year. Group tours, arranged by advanced reservation, combine firefighting history with important fire safety information.

The Museum provides organized tours for groups consisting of a minimum of ten (10) individuals and a recommended maximum of thirty-five (35) individuals including both children and adults. The fee is $3.00 per child and $5.00 per adult. One adult leader is admitted free of charge for every ten (10) children.

The tour, conducted by members of the FDNY's Education Unit and retired NYC fire fighters, takes approximately one hour (60 minutes). The level and length of the tour is adjusted to the age and interest of the group. The tour consists of an introduction to the Fire Museum, a guided visit to the Museum's first floor apparatus room, and an interactive fire safety and prevention presentation. This involves participation in a safe, simulated smoke/fire situation.

The group visits a mock apartment equipped with lasers, black lights, safe smoke and other devices that illustrate common fire hazards and promote safer living environments. Any individuals with breathing problems or asthma can observe rather than participate. It is recommended that comfortable clothing be worn for this activity.
